In 1958, a group of islanders formed the Lewis Crofters as a crofters co-operative to buy-in agricultural supplies and livestock feed from the mainland at a fairer price.

Lewis Crofters later expanded into selling household goods, ironmongery, clothing, and pet supplies.

Many social enterprises go bust every year and the Lewis Crofters had it share of difficult trading conditions

But it survived six decades and is now one of island’s busiest shops - still providing an important service to the local crofting industry.
