A search was launched for a missing driver following a car crash on Lewis today.

A Volkswagen Golf flipped and landed on its roof on the Barvas moor road.

A passing motorist spotted the overturned vehicle and raised the alarm at 6.45am, said a police spokesman.

But there was no sign of the driver, sparking concerns for his welfare.

Searchers spent hours scouring the area for the man.

He was later traced some eight miles away said Police Scotland.

The man only had cuts and bruises but no serious injuries, it is believed.

The main route between Barvas and Newmarket was closed for a number of hours.

The road reopened around 10.45am.
