Nine islanders are contesting three vacancies for Stòras Uibhist, the South Uist community owned landlord.

Directors Angus MacMillan and Kate MacDonald have to stand down after their three years stint, in accordance with the company’s rules. Angus MacMillan will also re-stand.

Following strong unhappiness within the community over Stòras, Stephen MacAulay renounced his right to finish his term. He is re-standing to seek a fresh mandate from the electorate.

Members will receive ballot papers in the next couple of weeks.  Completed slips need to be sent to the Electoral Reform Services no later than Wednesday 4 July for counting.

Results of the election will be announced immediately at the end of the count and presented to the membership at the AGM on 1 July.

Ian Paterson, chief executive of parent company Sealladh na Beinne Mòire, said: “I am delighted to announce that we have nine candidates standing for election.

“This is an exciting time for the organisation and I would encourage the membership to study the candidate profiles and take the time to vote.

“This will ensure that we have the right board in place to take the organisation into the next phase of development and growth.”

A postal election starts on 18 June. Voters are allowed to make multiple choices on the ballot paper.
