Scotland’s deputy first minister is impressed with the “excellent” progress made in building a £49 million deep water port in Stornoway.

John Swinney visited the marine construction works by Glumaig Bay on Saturday afternoon.

He believes the development will be a game changer for the local economy and for Scotland’s aspirations to grow renewables and cruise ship sectors.

The depth at its main berth is being dredged to accommodate the largest cruise liners which are expected to start visiting from next year.

This will provide a further boost to the islands’ important tourism industry following a record-breaking cruise season. A total of 61 liners visited the port last summer, an increase on pre-Covid figures.

Work is expected to be completed before the year end with civil engineering firm McLaughlin and Harvey undertaking the construction contract.

Development of the terminal will also increase the capabilities and flexibility of the Arnish fabrication yard.
