Deputy First Minister, John Swinney, is due to officially open a new Gaelic cultural centre this week.

Cnoc Soilleir is a focal building that launches a new chapter in the Gàidhlig heartland of South Uist, with facilities for community-led activities involving Gàidhlig language learning, heritage, culture, music and dance.

The building has come to life over the summer, launching with the Ceòlas summer school while enrolment for college classes commences soon.  

Cnoc Soilleir will offer new short courses in music, singing and Gàidhlig, archaeology.

The community is invited to the official opening event on Thursday morning with attendees asked to be on site by 10am.  

Seonaidh MacDonald, Cnoc Soilleir independent director will kick-off proceedings with a short address before the ribbon cutting ceremony.

Daliburgh School pupils will sing a couple of songs and perform a Hebridean dance, followed by official speeches.

Macinnes Brothers constructed the modern new premises this year.

A performance hall and dance studio is also planned to be built as a separate project.
