Three people from the Western Isles have been named in the New Year Honours list.

Elizabeth McAtear of Barra is made an OBE for services to the Western Isles

Well known genealogist, Bill Lawson, of Harris receives a BEM for services to the community in the Western Isles.

Also awarded a BEM is Charlie Nicolson of Stornoway for his voluntary and charitable service in the Western Isles

Western Isles Lord Lieutenant Iain Macaulay said: “It is a proud moment for the Western Isles community that three of its residents have been recognised for their exceptional contributions to our community over many years.

“Their areas of expertise and interests in volunteering, charitable work and the cultural heritage of the Hebrides reflect the rich talent of our islands. All have provided outstanding service, in their various roles, not just locally but also much further afield.

“In awarding this national honour, the king is recognising their achievements by acknowledging the work they have done and the legacy they have created.

“They have all made a positive difference to the lives of many people and I send them my sincere congratulations. Of course, all of this would not be possible without people making the effort to submit nominations and I also thank them for taking the time to do so."
