All emergency service vehicles based in Stornoway have been fitted with specially designed car stickers commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Iolaire disaster.

Poppy Scotland gave special permission for their design of a poppy and the Iolaire bell to be used.

Initially, the poppy was carried on police vehicles in an initiative was organised by PC Rick Henderson to allow local officers to pay tribute to those who lost their lives in the tragedy.

Coastguards, fire service, RNLI and the ambulance service are now displaying the emblem

N orman A MacDonald, chairman of the Iolaire Working Group, said: “The Iolaire Working Group is delighted that the emergency services have chosen to adopt the Iolaire poppy in recognition of the loss of HMY Iolaire.

“We are also very grateful for all their continued support in the lead up to the commemoration events taking place on the 31st of December and the 1st of January.”

The HMS Iolaire foundered on rocks at Holm, just a short distance from the entrance to Stornoway Harbour in the early hours of 1 January 1919.

The ship was carrying naval men who had fought in World War I back to the Western Isles. More than 200 people died in the disaster.
