Scottish Water is set to install a total of 18 miles of new pipes to supply fresh
water to homes and businesses in two districts in Lewis.
The water mains replacement works will proceed as separate projects.
£4.5 million of works to upgrade over nine miles of water pipes in Ness is expected
to take 15 months.
Local contractors, D Mackay and Sons, plan to start work next week, on Wednesday
16 October.
Most of the work will be carried out on the verge next to the single track road,
or in the road. Roadworks will take place throughout including the use of temporary
traffic lights, localised road closures, and some access restrictions. Advance signage
will be in place ahead of any work on the road.
The publicly owned utility has confirmed that a dedicated site team will be in place
to assist and communicate with people who may experience restricted access during
the construction work. The work will be carried out on a rolling basis, as part
of a wider programme.
Preparatory works for the second project will commence in Tong and Coll in a fortnight,
from Monday, 21st October.
Calmax has been appointed to install the £3 million pipeline which aims to improve
the water mains. Work is scheduled to begin in earnest on 11th November with an estimated
duration of 14 months.
