Repairs to the broken down MV Loch Alainn were not fully successful and further work is required to one of her main engines.

The ship which plies between Barra and Eriskay has been out of action since Sunday morning.

A specialist engineer was called in to investigate the issue and commence repairs.

No relief service could be arranged and all Sound of Barra sailings were cancelled until MV Loch Bhrusda arrived on Tuesday when the weather moderated to allow her to cross from Mallaig.

A timeline for repairs has not been announced. A specialist engineer is assessing the extent of the situation.

The need for additional engine works were identified during sea trials which place at lunchtime on Wednesday.

CalMac hopes the vessel will be cleared to resume service this afternoon.

If not, MV Loch Bhrusda will continue operating a relief service for the time being.

An update will be provided this morning regarding the timetable from the late afternoon.

CalMac advised that due to a potential crew availability issue, the last two (revised) timetabled return sailings are liable to disruption or cancellation at short notice.
