Head Gardener

A full-time, fixed term, Head Gardener is required for the historic Lews Castle Grounds, based in picturesque Stornoway.

The Stornoway Trust requires an experienced, qualified Head Gardener to lead a small team based in the Lews Castle Grounds as part of a £4.7M Heritage Fund regeneration project.  Your role will be to implement the reinstatement of the Designed Landscape as envisaged by the Lews Castle Grounds creator Sir James Matheson in the mid-1800s, now updated to take it into the 21st century.

The Stornoway Trust is Scotland’s oldest community-owned land estate, which is tasked with the management and maintenance of the Lews Castle Grounds (approximately 300ha) and located on the outskirts of the Westerns Isles largest town, Stornoway (pop. 8,000).

The Role

The ideal candidate must have suitable experience and qualifications with at least four years’ heritage gardening experience.  You must have a sound knowledge of plants and horticultural practices including botanical plants experience in a senior heritage gardens role.  You must be physically fit, possess excellent communication skills, and have a good understanding of health and safety requirements in an outdoors environment.

You must be well organised and confident in managing a small team (gardener and apprentices to be recruited by you).  The successful candidate must be able to maintain the new designed landscape to a high standard and work closely with Trust staff, including the Tree Nursery staff, and other stakeholders to help contribute to the ongoing development of the Castle Grounds.

The role is Monday to Friday, with flexible hours according to workload and time of year.  A salary of circa £30,000 is available depending on your experience.

To request a copy of the Job Description and application form please contact anne.macdonald@stornowaytrust.org.uk or phone 01851 702 002 to discuss the role in person.  Don’t miss out on this exciting opportunity to really make your mark in the glorious Western Isles of Scotland.

Applications should be returned by 5pm on Tuesday 19 March and interviews will be held the week starting 25 March at the Stornoway Trust offices.  Reasonable travel expense will be reimbursed for those attending interviews.  A relocation package is available for the successful applicant.
