A proposal for a community hub and cafe in Tarbert is being developed.

The project aims to transform a former under utilised car park near Sir E Scott School into a “vibrant and essential” community space.

The application has been forwarded to council planners by North Harris Community Council to change the current use of the land to allow siting of units for the cafe plus the creation of a community garden. Five parking spaces would be provided.

The vision is to create an “inclusive, adaptable, and vibrant” space that fosters connection, learning, and enjoyment for the entire community.

The hub will serve as a “safe, welcoming environment” for young people after school hours, featuring a small café and garden, while being accessible to the public at certain times during the week and able to host community events.

The project follows a “simple, affordable, and realistic” design, ensuring it aligns with budget and timescales to maximise the chances of successful delivery says a supporting statement.

With a strong emphasis on providing a safe space for young people, the hub aims to serve as a central gathering point for socialising, learning life skills, and enjoying time outdoors.

The café and garden will add further value by offering community-wide benefits, while the design remains cost-effective and practical.

Organisers intend to engage actively with key stakeholders such as pupils, teachers, and local organisations throughout the design and planning process to ensure the final outcome reflects the needs and aspirations of the Harris community.
