A stricken salmon farm vessel was floated off rocks 24 hours after it grounded near Skye.

MV Settler was stuck fast after running ashore on Monday in the Kylerhea Narrows about four miles south of the Skye bridge.

Attempts to refloat her yesterday morning incoming tide failed. Three fish farm workboats tried to pull her off but the line broke.

However, last night (Wednesday) she moved astern with ease at high water.

The Shetland-owned wellboat - which is designed to carry live fish in two large water tanks - steamed to Mallaig under her own power for checks.

Portree lifeboat and Kyle inshore lifeboat were called to the emergency on Monday when the 40-metre-long vessel - formerly called the Ronja Settler - stranded on the rocky shore by Glenelg on the mainland side of the strait across from Skye.

The crew were taken off by lifeboat and transferred to a nearby vessel.

Andrew MacDonald, spokesman for Kyle RNLI Lifeboat, said: “The vessel ran aground around the time of high tide, therefore by the time ourselves and other assistance arrived on scene, there was no way we could get the boat refloated.

“The decision was made to take the crew off the vessel overnight for their own safety.”
