“Get Growing” on Harris                      19/4/10

The Get Growing programme of horticultural training by the Lewis & Harris Horticultural Producers (LHHP) is coming to Harris in May.

The LHHP’s first workshop will introduce people to the basics of growing and sowing. Run by trained horticulturalist Kirsty Macdonald of Upper Carloway, Lewis, the session is set for 7pm on Wednesday 5 May 2010 at the Tarbert Community Centre.

The first of three Get Growing sessions on Harris, others will follow on Wednesday 12 May and Wednesday 26 May. The workshops are free thanks to support from the Scottish Government’s Climate Challenge Fund. According to the LHHP, Lewis and Harris are lucky to have received such funding, without which this work at the grass roots level to get more people growing would be prohibitive.

“By producing more ourselves, we can cut CO2 and other emissions associated with food transport,” says LHHP Get Growing project officer Barry Shelby. “Plus, growing fruit and vegetables locally improves food security, in these times of transport disruptions. Finally, local food is not only fresher, it tastes better.”

The programme in May will include hands-on workshops, discussion, and advice on topics such as healthy soil, composting, raised beds, crop rotation and shelter. Places can be booked by e-mailing
