The community purchase of the former Sandwickhill School is being explored.

A steering group has been established to consider the potential of creating a community hub on the campus two miles outside Stornoway.

Initial suggestions for its future use include opening a local shop.

Incorporating small rental business units suitable for a hairdressing or laundrette service, was also mooted.

Former class rooms could be rented out as offices, for meetings or to hold playgroup sessions.

Operating a bowling alley was another idea as well as other leisure activities such as a skatepark or adventure swingpark.

The premises could be a base for an Iolaire exhibition or museum

Providing caravan and motorhome pitches could tap into the growing tourism trade.

Proposals are at a very early stage and the steering group are seeking feedback from local residents.

A survey has been set up at Sandwickhill Steering Group- Community Project Survey

The premises was converted into a learning centre by the comhairle after it closed as a primary school about ten years ago.

A steering group spokesman said: “There is an opportunity to take the complete Sandwick School site - school building and hall - into community ownership.

“This would secure a central hub for the community. A transformational asset for the growing community.”

The group has hope that funding could be sourced to acquire the land and buildings and develop the site into a community asset.

“However, before moving forward it is really important for the group that we gather the views of the community on this potential undertaking.”
