Fire crews have been fighting a blaze at the Thai Cafe in Stornoway.

The alarm was raised at 4.15pm this afternoon (Sunday).

Three fire engines attended at the scene on Church Street directly opposite Stornoway police station.

A number of fire personnel donned breathing sets during the incident.

Most of Church Street was closed to traffic between the Blythswood Shop on Kenneth Street and Matheson Road as the incident developed. The upper reaches of the road closure allowed safe and unhampered access to a water hydrant by the TA Drill Hall with hoses running along the road to the premises.

Police cordons were set up at a number of junctions with intersecting roads at Keith Street and Lewis Street.

Parts of the street started to reopen at 7.30pm though the Thai Cafe section of road remained closed with one fire engine still at the scene tonight.

The extent of damage is currently unknown said the fire service.

In a social media post to customers, Panida Macdonald, one of the owners of the Thai Cafe, said: “Thank you for all your messages of support today.

“We don’t know the situation at the restaurant yet and are waiting for it to be assessed.

“The main thing is that no one was hurt. We are so grateful to the emergency services for their swift response and hard work.

She added: “We will be closed for the time being, and will update you all when we know more.”
