A fire broke out in the engine room of MV Hebrides at sea.
The vessel returned to Uig pier in Skye where “further investigations are taking place.” Passengers were taken ashore.
The incident occurred on the first day of normal ferry services to North Uist and Harris following tens weeks of closure for reconstruction.
Sailings are now suspended until later tomorrow (Wednesday) at least. The vessel will remain at Uig overnight.
Fire crews attended following her arrival back at the pier.
The incident occurred shortly after the Hebrides cast off with travellers and vehicles heading for Lochmaddy.
The ship was navigating though Loch Snizort and turned around back into Uig Bay when the alarm was raised. She later docked at the berth.
Three fire crews were summoned to the quayside. Local coastguard teams also attended.
A CalMac spokeswoman told Hebrides News: “MV Hebrides is currently berthed in Uig after a fire broke out in the engine room during passage this afternoon.
“No-one was reported as injured and crew were able to extinguish the fire.
“Emergency services attended and have now been stood down. The vessel will remain berthed in Uig tonight (Tuesday).”
No confirmation has been given as to when the vessel will return to service. Sailings are cancelled today and early tomorrow morning. An revised timetable may be possible on Wednesday but details will not be available until closer to the time.
CalMac said Wednesday’s 7.30am Tarbert-Uig run and the 9.40am service to Lochmaddy will not operate. There will be a review at 10am for sailings for the remainder of the day. If service resumes, it will follow an amended timetable.
