Job Title:                    Engagement Officer

Salary                          £22,000

Location:                    Calanais Visitor Centre

Contract:                    Three-year Fixed Term Contract

(Note: this can be on a two- person job-share basis)

The Calanais Standing Stones, or ‘Tursachan Chalanais’, are the premier iconic visitor attraction in the Outer Hebrides, with more than 125,000 people each year visiting the Stones as part of their trip to the Outer Hebrides. Calanais plays a key role in Scotland’s tourism offer, featuring heavily in the marketing of Scotland to a global audience. The Stones are an Historic Environment Scotland Property in Care.

Urras nan Tursachan (UnT or the Standing Stones Trust) is an independent charitable trust serving local people and visitors from around the world, helping both to interpret and (through commissioning research) to understand better the ancient Calanais landscape within its broader context. For over 25 years we have run the Calanais Visitor Centre (CVC) and promoted the Calanais area to a worldwide audience.

We are now embarking on a programme to enhance Calanais’ position as the heritage tourism hub for the Isle of Lewis, and as a significant player in the economic and social regeneration of the Outer Hebrides. We aim for radical improvement of the visitor experience through a redevelopment of the CVC and the introduction of range of new visitor experiences. We also aim, by 2025, to establish a Heritage Fund to invest in the heritage of the Outer Hebrides.

We are currently looking to recruit an Engagement Officer, whose role will be to develop and deepen engagement with the archaeology of the Calanais area, and of the Outer Hebrides more generally, not only among the local community in Lewis, but also among visitors to the Stones and to the CVC, and our worldwide online audience.

The main tasks will include:

- Developing and implementing a community archaeology plan and offer, initially for Lewis but with a view to rolling out across the Outer Hebrides

- Strengthening links with the local community in Lewis in order to deepen our shared appreciation of the local archaeological heritage

Developing and promoting sustainable heritage tourism and enhancing visitors’ experience of the Calanais landscape. If you are passionate about the archaeological heritage of the Outer Hebrides, have a proven track record in community project activity and are self-motivated and able to work on projects without close supervision, then this is an excellent opportunity to work at Calanais and make a real impact on our work in the community.

This is a 3-year, full-time post, and we are willing to consider job share arrangements. The post has been principally funded by a grant from Historic Environment Scotland
