An elderly cruise liner passenger suffering a heart attack was airlifted from a ship off South Uist.

The man in his 70s was winched off the 225-metre long Seven Sea Explorer as it steamed south through the Minch .

Stornoway coastguard helicopter landed the man directly at the Stornoway hospital yesterday afternoon.

Stornoway coastguard rescue team met the aircraft at the hospital helipad and assisted with the transfer of the man to the emergency department.

He was later flown to a Glasgow hospital by air ambulance.

The Marshall Isles flagged passenger ship continued to her destination on the Clyde.
