Over 80 young people were presented with Duke of Edinburgh’s Award certificates at
a ceremony for Lewis participants in the Nicolson Institute, Stornoway.
The Angus Clinton Memorial Award went to Donald Macsween who supports the Nicolson
Institute Group. The award continues to be a success in the Western Isles thanks
to the number of Volunteers that support our young people to achieve their goal.
Katie Shaw from Stornoway received the Mark Elliot Memorial Award. The Western Isles
Duke of Edinburgh’s Award worked in partnership with the Hebrides Search and Rescue
team to commemorate the late Mark Elliot who was a dedicated member of their team.
The HebMRT Team wished to have an award that would be presented to a Duke of Edinburgh’s
Award participant who demonstrated exceptional abilities to work as part of a team,
make decisions under pressure, has good problem-solving skills, demonstrates leadership,
enthusiasm and commitment.
This year’s event was opened by Paul Finnegan, the comhairle’s chair of Education,
Sports and Children’s Services while MSP Alasdair Allan presented the awards.
Paul Finnegan said the awards scheme has given young people across the Western Isles
a “sense of achievement and motivation for many years.
“Holders of the award have done themselves, and their communities, proud. The award
looks great on a CV, and the hard work and dedication that is required to complete
it sets young people up for a promising future.”
