A dog killed a sheep after escaping from a house in Stornoway.

Leah Annie Mackay of Keith Street, Stornoway, was ordered to pay £400 compensation to the livestock owner when she appeared at Stornoway Sheriff Court.

She pleaded guilty to being in charge of the Husky which killed the sheep.

Sheriff David Sutherland remarked upon the “somewhat unusual circumstances in the escape” after being told the dog, which belonged to the 21-year-old’s sister, had a habit of opening doors by pulling down on the handle.

Procurator fiscal David Morton told the court the woman was alerted to the incident by a social media message.

Lawyer David Teale explained Mackay was looking after the Husky and inadvertently left the house door closed but unlocked in September.

The dog got out and ended up chasing livestock in a field at Mossend Farm.

One sheep was bitten on the neck and later died from its injuries.

She “responsibly” reported the incident to police he said.
