Bruce Guthro who was Runrig’s frontman for 20 years has died.
The Canadian native passed away on Tuesday after a battle with cancer.
He had just celebrated his 62nd birthday on Thursday.
Bruce had suffered health issues for a number of years and his illness worsened in recent weeks.
He is survived by his wife, Kim, and two children, Jodi and Dylan.
His former Runrig bandmate Pete Wishart said: “So, so sad to hear of the untimely death of my friend and former band mate Bruce Guthro.
“He was just the nicest person you could ever hope to meet and a joy to perform with.
“An exceptional singer, musician and song writer taken far too soon. We are going to miss him. RIP.”
A message from Runrig said: “It is heaviest of hearts with profound sadness that we inform you of the news that Bruce passed away last night, having finally lost a long battle with cancer that has stretched back many years.
“Everyone associated with Runrig is heartbroken at the loss of a dear friend, and such a special musical colleague.
“Our immediate thoughts and prayers at this time are with Kim, Dylan and Jodi.
Guthro who hailed from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, and latterly lived near Halifax, had a music career spanning 40 years.
On Donnie Munro’s departure from Runrig, Guthro was selected as lead vocalist. He eventually spent two decades on this side of the Atlantic with the band
He born in Sydney Mines in 1961, the seventh of nine children.
As a young man he worked in the hard rock mines of Northern Saskatchewan before returning home to pursue his passion for music and song-writing.
EMI signed him commercially in 1998, leading the path to his first international record deal.
