VisitScotland’s information centre in Stornoway town centre will shut its doors for
good next month it has been confirmed.
The decision will impact the organisation’s last remaining tourist office in the
Western Isles.
Tourist offices were previously axed in Lochmaddy, Lochboisdale, Castlebay and Tarbert
around six years ago though private or community ventures continued to provide some
information services for visitors.
The Stornoway tourist centre is currently winding down as this year’s summer season
comes to an end.
Its final day of trading has been set for 4 October.
The rented premises will then be emptied and handed back to its owners.
All VisitScotland information centres across Scotland are being abolished as part
of phased two-year closure programme.
Stornoway has been included in the first phase. A number of others will be retained
for another year, shutting in autumn 2025.
The body says most holidaymakers use online resources and travel specialists to research
and book their trips. This includes arranging accommodation and activities before
they arrive at their destination.
The tourist office in Ullapool is due to shut in a fortnight while the Oban office
will close on 22 October, soon after the Royal National Mod leaves town.
