New radio signal is switched on 30/3/11
Sirs,
It has always been amusing to see stores in Stornoway dating back to
Woolworth days stocking DAB radios despite there not being any DAB reception in the Western Isles.
Most DAB radios are designed to receive DAB only and not the normal FM. In need of a new clock radio last weekend I saw a bargain
priced clock radio in a local Stornoway supermarket which had both DAB and FM. I thought it would be worth purchasing as "DAB ready" if and when available.
Imagine my surprise when switching it on it immediately stored 11 BBC DAB channels and the correct time. The quality was as good or better than FM radio.
The channels included the normal FM BBC Radios 1-
I checked on the web to see where DAB reception was available and all the sites including BBC stated no DAB radio available for Western Isles.
On further investigation and an enquiry to a DAB newsgroup I was told that
Eitshal began DAB radio transmissions a week ago on Tuesday 22nd March.
After all the publicity for digital TV it is surprising that no mention has
been made about the start of DAB radio in Lewis!
Unfortunately the channel list does not contain Radio Scotland or Radio nan Gaidheal yet so will be missing if you have a DAB only radio . It may also be a long wait for the multiple commercial radio stations to be added.
