Emergency services raced to the rescue of a Highland cow which was desperately trying to evade the overtures of a bull in Harris today (Thurs).
She poured cold water on his encounters and the bull chased her into a freshwater loch in Quidinish on the east coast of the island.
The small female Highlander ended up stuck in the mud for over two hours.
“The bull was being a bit of a bully,” said one source.
“He was giving the cow a hard time and pushed her into the water.”
Fire crews from Stornoway and Leverburgh attended as did Tarbert and Scalpay coastguard teams.
Fire crews successfully pulled out the cow.
But the bull came after her again, driving her into the loch a second time.
An observer said: “They had finished rescuing the cow but the bull forced her back in.
A second rescue operation recovered the animal onto dry land but the bull launched yet another advance.
“Quick interception” by the “guys on scene” spared the cow any further mayhem.
Fortunately, the bull’s owners enticed it away with a bag of feed allowing the cow to make a safe escape.
Stornoway coastguards said a villager alerted the SSPCA who called the emergency services for assistance around 11.40am.
A spokesperson said: “They rescued the cow out of the loch but then it went back in a second time.”
