Death of esteemed island priest

9 February 2019

Well known priest, Canon Angus MacQueen, has died.

He passed away peacefully this morning (Sat) in St Brendan's home in Castlebay where he was resident in recent years.

Canon Angus John Macqueen - who was in his mid-90s - hailed from Iochdar, South Uist.

The long serving priest was ordained in July 1951 and ministered in various places on the mainland as well as on Eriskay, Castlebay and South Uist.

However, the majority of his priesthood was spent on Barra. Latterly, he was parish priest at St Barrs in the north of the island, regularly taking weekly Gaelic Mass at Eoligarry and Northbay until recent years.

His remains will be received into St Michael's Church, Ardkenneth, South Uist at 7pm on Wednesday.

His Requiem Mass will be celebrated on Thursday 14th in St Michael's at 11am, followed by burial at Ardivachar Cemetery.
