Southerly winds will strengthen to gale force over Tuesday with spells of rain as an Atlantic low moves in.  Conditions remain mild until a chilly westerly wind enters the fray on Wednesday. Temperatures dip further on Thursday.

Ferries are running ahead of the incoming weather with an early start for some in an attempt to complete sailings in the first part of the day before a force eight gale arrives

MV Lord of the Isles plans to make a dash for it with a 6.30am departure - rather than 10am - out of Oban. Passage time may be extended due to sea conditions. On Wednesday she may operate to Oban and not Mallaig as scheduled due to weather.

The Skye triangle vessel will run two hours ahead of schedule over the day setting off at 5.30am in the hope of undertaking all sailings for Lochmaddy and Tarbert before fierce gusts hit her route this evening.

MV Isle of Lewis will depart Castlebay at 5am, nearly two hours earlier than timetabled, with plans for a swift turnaround at Oban to run before the incoming weather. The service is liable to disruption or cancellation at short notice if the weather peaks earlier than forecast.

Sound of Barra sailings face potential disruption.

The evening departure from Ullapool is liable to disruption and cancellation at short notice. Tonight’s Stornoway freight run is also on yellow alert.

A tidal timetable is in force for the Sound of Harris route today.
