Hebrides News

A weather front moving slowly southward is set to bring strong winds and spells of heavy rain to many parts of the Western Isles today (Monday).

Strong gusts are expected south of Lewis though temperatures remain fairly mild.

On the west coast and Highlands, weather warnings of heavy rain include travel routes to and from Western Isle ferries.

Conditions for the Western Isles remain blustery with strong gusts and more rain on Tuesday as another Atlantic low moves in. Temperatures begin to dip by Wednesday with gusty winds.

For today (Monday), due to forecast strong winds, CalMac has placed some ferry services on yellow alert.

The first timetabled returned sailings between Barra and Eriskay are cancelled while the timetable for the rest of the day is liable to disruption or cancellation at short notice.

MV Isle of Lewis has brought forward her Monday morning departure by half an hour to 6.30am.

MV Loch Seaforth’s overnight freight run did not operate but the vessel resumes service this morning from Stornoway.

With south westerly gale force winds and very rough seas anticipated for the longer Oban route, the morning forecast updates will determine whether the Lochboisdale ferry sails.

Meanwhile, the Skye triangle route is on yellow alert for Tuesday.
