Hebrides News

Adverse weather over the next couple of days is set to bring rough seas and strong winds.

Increasing wind speeds from Friday afternoon are expected to develop into a force eight gale later that evening - firstly in Barra before tracking northwards up the island chain - and overnight into Saturday.

Conditions are likely to touch severe gale levels on Saturday with blustery winds continuing on Sunday.

CalMac ferries which have so far declared potential disruption include the MV Isle of Lewis which intends to run ahead of the incoming weather, bringing her morning departure from Barra ahead by an hour and a speedy turnaround in Oban. If the weather comes in as forecast, the vessel will dock in Castlebay before the winds peak. Intending travellers should catch the Friday ferry as Saturday’s timetable is presently in doubt due to worsening seas.

Freight sailings on the Stornoway - Ullapool service are liable to disruption or cancellation at short notice. Livestock will be assessed on a case by case basis due to swell conditions.

Due to operating an additional sailing on Thursday 12 September and to provide crew compensatory rest, the early morning request return sailings on the Sound of Barra on Sunday are cancelled.

Travellers should watch out for CalMac disruption alerts which have yet to be announced.
