Hebrides News

The recent run of cold be settled weather is set to change from today as the Scandinavian High loses its influence.

Frontal systems are starting to dominate Scotland’s weather again with high wind speeds and rain expected this week.

Today (Monday), a strong south easterly airflow is forecast to touch force eight later over Barra.

Then on Tuesday an Atlantic low deepening off Ireland is expected to sweep up the southern half of the Western Isles, accompanied by adverse weather.

Conditions are expected to worsen over the second part of the week.

Ferry sailings for South Uist and Barra are set to be impacted this week if the weather comes in as forecast.

Advising South Uist and Barra passengers, CalMac said: “Due to poor weather forecast for the forthcoming days, passengers are asked to travel on Monday 17 February where possible.”

MV Isle of Mull plans to run ahead of the bad weather by departing South Uist an hour earlier than timetable and will also leave Oban ahead of schedule.

The connecting early morning Sound of Barra ferry will now head off at 4am to get Barra travellers across.

Due to forecast wind speeds and wind direction in Castlebay this evening, MV Isle of Mull will divert to Lochboisdale tonight and not Barra as scheduled.

Sailing schedules and potential disruption impacts will be reviewed with updated weather forecasts are available.

All sailings on the Sound of Barra link are also on yellow alert today due to the adverse weather conditions.
