A bomb squad has safely disposed of a suspicious device found in a house in Lewis.

A Royal Navy explosive ordnance disposal unit spent a number of hours in the property in Breasclete.

Residents and tourists staying in the immediate vicinity were evacuated last night.

An exclusion zone was set up around the house and nearby roads closed.

The item was carefully scrutinised by specialist personnel and disposed off this morning.

The cordon affecting roads was later lifted.

A Police Scotland spokesman confirmed that Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) “attended at a property in Breasclete on Lewis in relation to an unidentified device found on Monday, July 1.

“The device was examined by EOD and subsequently safely disposed of.

“A small number of people from neighbouring properties were requested to vacate as a precaution and have since been allowed to return to their homes.”

Chief Inspector Ian Graham said: "These measures were put in place as a precaution and I would like to thank everyone affected for their patience and understanding.

"I am also grateful for the specialist support of the EOD and would reassure the wider community that there was no risk to the public during this enquiry.

"I would like to thank those affected for their patience and apologise for any inconvenience to the wider community."

The house has been the centre of police activity since early last week.

Villagers said they observed a heavy police presence with officers in white overalls and sniffer dogs.
