Billy McNeill cup presentation 26/9/13
The Billy McNeill football competition was launched after the trophy was presented
to Uist players in Stornoway in 1979.
The cup was presented by former Celtic player and then team coach Neil Mochan, who
accompanied the Celtic Boys Club to Lewis for games against Stornoway United and
Ness FC.
The Stornoway side had drafted in Uist teenagers who were in 6th year in the Nicolson
Institute.
Star player Donald John Macdonald of South Uist was called away from his university
studies on the mainland to strengthen the squad and, as the senior member of the
Uist contingent, the trophy was entrusted to him.
The 1979 Uist players were, from left, Donald John Walker, Neil McRury, John Percy
Macpherson, John Fletch Morrison, Seumas Macmillan and Donald John Macdonald (far
right).
