Barra competes for title of Europe’s most scenic airport

Barra Airport is in the running to be this year’s most scenic airfield in Europe.

The beach runway approach took second place in the past two years.

Thousands of fans around the world regularly participate in the poll run by charter plane company, PrivateFly.

The top 10 is an annual bucket list for travel fans, a fascinating mix of global descents to experience.

The vast sandy expanse of Traigh Mhòr is the only place in the world where scheduled flights land and take off from a beach.

The mile-long cockle strand is flooded by the sea twice a day so planes have to time their flights with the tide.

The shortlist includes airports that have proved popular in previous polls - ranging from iconic cityscapes, to island and coastal approaches, to mountain top runways.
