An Atlantic low is set to bring a series of weather fronts across the north of Scotland with gales and rain forecast into the weekend.

Western Isles coastguards urged islanders to “be aware of the possibility of disruption across Western Isles causeways and low lying areas from now into Friday morning.”

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar warned strong south easterly winds with gusts of up to 60 mph are forecast for this (Thursday) afternoon and evening.

The winds will be accompanied by rain through the evening and early morning.

Due to a combination of high tides, surge and strong winds there is a localised risk of coastal flooding from wave and spray overtopping on Thursday and Friday morning.

The greatest risk is around the time of high water on Thursday evening, which is around 7pm and again at 7am Friday morning.

A spokesman said: “Please be aware of the possibility of disruption across Western Isles causeways and low lying areas from now into Friday morning.”
