An adventurer who launched a solo attempt to stay on Rockall has been rescued.

Cam Cameron issued an emergency alert for help this morning (Wednesday) due to worsening weather and rough sea conditions at the tiny islet.

Stornoway coastguard helicopter undertook a long range mission to reach the 54-year-old after he issued a call for help this morning.

To reduce the flying distance over open water, the helicopter initially flew south for a refuelling stop at the South Uist rocket range, it is believed, before embarking on the 204 nautical mile flight from there to Rockall.

A coastguard Beech King Air fixed-wing plane provided overhead cover.

Both aircraft returned to Stornoway Airport shortly after 7pm this evening.

He was taken to Western Isles hospital for a precautionary check-up.

An update from the expedition’s land-based support team shore said: “Due to declining weather conditions and sea state at Rockall over the last 24 hrs, Cam has this afternoon declared a mayday.

“An operation to evacuate him from Rockall is currently being coordinated by HM Coastguard. Please do not speculate at this time.”

The latest message from the team as the helicopter approached Stornoway said: “Cam has now been recovered from Rockall, and is safe and in good hands. We will post further updates in the coming days.”

Cam Cameron landed on Rockall last month hoping to break the 45-day world record while raising funds for military charities.

o inhabit Rockall for 60 days to raise money for the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity and ABF The Soldiers' Charity.
