Stornoway Port is offering young islanders a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take
to the seas as part of the Tall Ships Races 2025.
Applications are now open for 10 local trainees from Lewis and Harris, aged between
15 and 25, to sail aboard the Swan, Shetland’s historic sail training vessel, on
its leg between Dunkirk and Aberdeen, a part of this summer’s world-famous event.
Successful applicants will experience life at sea, build confidence, and develop
skills in teamwork, leadership and navigation. As part of the Swan’s crew, participants
will also take on real responsibilities, including hoisting sails and plotting courses,
while sailing alongside tall ships from around the world.
Alex Macleod, chief executive at Stornoway Port, said: “This is an incredible chance
for young people to challenge themselves, gain new skills, and make lifelong memories.
The Tall Ships Races are about adventure, teamwork, and discovery, and I encourage
anyone interested to apply.
“We are delighted to support another group of young sailors in the race. This is
about equipping young people with skills, confidence, and an appreciation of our
maritime history. I hope the Tall Ships Races 2025 will offer an unforgettable experience
for all involved.”
The Swan, launched in 1900 in Lerwick, originally built as a Fifie herring drifter,
has been carefully restored as a sail training ship. Unlike larger tall ships that
accommodate over 140 trainees, The Swan provides a more immersive and hands-on sailing
experience, ensuring participants take on greater responsibilities, from sail handling
to navigation. The boat previously trained over 40 young sailors during the 2023
event.
